Asterisk 1.8 is the next major release series of Asterisk. It will be a Long Term Support (LTS) release, similar to Asterisk 1.4. For more information about support time lines for Asterisk releases, see the Asterisk versions page.

Ubuntu 10.10 Beta

The Ubuntu developers are moving quickly to bring you the absolute latest and greatest software the Open Source community has to offer. The Maverick Meerkat Beta is the beta release of Ubuntu 10.10, bringing with it new features for the next version of Ubuntu.

This is a beta release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released on October 10, 2010.

Upgrading from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

To upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a desktop system, press Alt+F2 and type in "update-manager -d" (without the quotes) into the command box. Update Manager should open up and tell you: New distribution release '10.10' is available. Click Upgrade and follow the on-screen instructions.
To upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on a server system: install the update-manager-core package if it is not already installed; edit /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades and set Prompt=normal; launch the upgrade tool with the command sudo do-release-upgrade -d; and follow the on-screen instructions.

SHARING FOLDER ON VIRTUALBOX

I install windows XP on virtualbox due to have to run windows based program. I used it as guest operating system where the host operating system is used Ubuntu. I need to access the ubuntu folder or vice versa to copy file. After trying some configuration, I find the way how to share the folder.

On host side:
1. System -> Administration -> Samba
2. Used password because it need admin right
3. Adduser at Samba
- Open terminal
- Add linux user
>>useradd jack
>>passwd jack
>>smbpasswd -a jack
4. Add user on samba server configuration
Preferences -> Samba User
5. Change network adapter on virtualbox
Default network adapter is NAT, change it to Host-only Adapter

On guest side.
For sharing folder at windows as usual only click right mouse on folder which want to be shared, and choose sharing folder

Note: due to used Host-only Adapter, could not used internet sharing, but if used NAT it could used internet sharing

etm is an acronym for Event and Task Manager. It provides a format for using simple text files to store event, task and action information, a command line interface for viewing tasks and events in a variety of convenient ways and a wx(python)-based GUI for creating and modifying events and tasks as well as viewing them. Displayed items can be grouped by date, context, keyword or project and can be filtered in a number of ways. A display of busy and free times is also supported as is a reckoning view of time spent that is suitable for client billing. Alarms are supported for events and repetition for both events and tasks in a powerful and flexible manner.

In etm, the important distinctions among events, tasks and activities are the following:

Event:	A reminder of something that will happen on a particular day (or days) and, perhaps, at a particular time. An event cannot be begun or finished either early or late. Events may or may not require our participation.
Task:	A reminder of something that needs to be done. It may or may not have a due date, and if it does, it might be begun and even finished before the due date. It might also be finished and even begun after the due date.
Action:	A record of the time-consuming action required to complete a task or participate in an event. Actions are not reminders, they are instead records of how time was actually spent.

Tiny Core Linux

Tiny Core Linux is a very small (10 MB) minimal Linux GUI Desktop. It is based on Linux 2.6 kernel, Busybox, Tiny X, and Fltk. The core runs entirely in ram and boots very quickly. Also offered is Micro Core a 6 MB image that is the console based engine of Tiny Core. CLI versions of Tiny Core's program allows the same functionality of Tiny Core's extensions only starting with a console based system.

It is not a complete desktop nor is all hardware completely supported. It represents only the core needed to boot into a very minimal X desktop typically with wired internet access.

The user has complete control over which applications and/or additional hardware to have supported, be it for a desktop, a netbook, an appliance, or server, selectable by the user by installing additional applications from online repositories, or easily compiling most anything you desire using tools provided.

PackageKit

PackageKit is a system designed to make installing and updating software on your computer easier. The primary design goal is to unify all the software graphical tools used in different distributions, and use some of the latest technology like PolicyKit to make the process suck less.

The actual nuts-and-bolts distro tool (yum, apt, conary, etc) is used by PackageKit using compiled and scripted helpers. PackageKit isn't meant to replace these tools, instead providing a common set of abstractions that can be used by standard GUI and text mode package managers.

PackageKit itself is a system activated daemon called packagekitd. Being system activated means that it's only being run when the user is using a text mode or graphical tool, and quits when it's no longer being used. This means we don't delay the boot sequence or session startup and don't consume memory when not being used.

gnome-packagekit is the name of the collection of graphical tools for PackageKit to be used in the GNOME desktop.

Sound-Rec-Ed - Sound Recorder & Editor

SoundRecEd is a pair of simple graphical utilities to record and edit sound files, similar to operating a tape-deck. Maintained under Sourceforge project SoundEdRec.

Sound-Recorder - Buttons start and stop recording, or split incoming audio into separate files. Captures incoming analog audio, such as from PC sound-card microphoneline-in jacks.
or
Sound-Editor - Cut sections from audio file, or join files.

Both tools save files in WAV, OGG, or MP3. SoundRecEd is not a full-blown professional mixer application. However, it provides functions that are frequently desired by casual users.

The Sound-Recorder/Editor utilities (also called SoundEdRec) are graphical front-ends (GUI's) for existing sound utilities that are already present on most Linux PC's. Although everything could be done from the command-line, it is often helpful to have a tool like Sound-Rec/Ed to accomplish frequently-repeated command-combinations by merely pressing buttons. The Sound-Editor tool also provides some visual editing capabilities. SoundRecEd's initial configuration defaults to commonly available record, playback, and conversion tools. It is easily configured to use any alternative tools that you prefer.

Without SoundRecEd, you could record audio from a live event using the ALSA arecordSound-Recorder GUI will do all these things automatically by pressing buttons: record, stop, pause, split, ... record, etc., similar to using a tape-deck. function on the command-line. At some point you may wish to pause the recording. Or, you wish to split the recording into separate files by resuming recording into a new sequentially named file. However, it would take some time to manipulate the command-line to do this. In the meantime, you miss incoming material, and/or accidentally overwrite an existing file. At the same time, to conserve disk space, you may wish to initiate conversion to OGG or MP3, followed by deletion of the WAV file. The

If your recording was not cued properly, you may want to cut a small section from the front or tail ends. The Sound-Editor will do this, similar to rewinding tape a bit to cue the next item. The Sound-Editor helps split long audio recording files into separate files. It shows information visually about a recording, and it can apply segue fading, if desired. If you need to record unattended for an extended period of time, you can set SoundRecorder to periodically break the recording into separate sequentially numbered files. The files can later be conveniently edited, cut-down or joined together (spliced), by Sound-Editor.

Conventional audio CD's can be made from the WAV-files captured by Sound-Recorder.
(For example: cdrecord -v speed=20 -audio -pad *.wav )
MP3 or OGG disks can also be made by both Sound-Recorder and Sound-Editor.
(Write MP3 or OGG files to CD's as regular data files; not audio.)

gnome-bluetooth is a fork of bluez-gnome focused on integration with the GNOME desktop environment (see also this blog entry for details).

gnome-bluetooth is the historical name of the first GNOME focused Bluetooth effort for Linux. As such, when the need came to name this project, we selected something that was still in the people's minds. You can find historical versions of gnome-bluetooth in the GNOME git repository.

gnome-bluetooth does not include the bluez-gnome analyzer, or the proximity tool.

The original GNOME Bluetooth was developed by Edd Dumbill, bluez-gnome was developed by Marcel Holtmann. The current primary maintainer is now Bastien Nocera. What is it really?

The EDDIE Tool is a monitoring agent. It runs standalone on a system and performs checks and other actions as defined by an extensible configuration. What can it do? The EDDIE Tool can perform all basic system monitoring checks, such as: filesystem; processes; system load; and network configuration. It can also perform such network monitoring tasks as: ping checks; HTTP checks; POP3 tests; SNMP queries; RADIUS authentication tests; and customized TCP port checks. Finally, a few checks lend themselves to security monitoring: watching files for changes; and scanning logfiles.
The EDDIE Tool can also send any collected statistic to RRD files to be displayed graphically by any standard RRD tool. No need to run multiple monitoring and data collection agents.
Monitoring rules are just like Python expressions and can be as simple or as complex as needed. Advanced alert control functionality such as exponential back-off and dependencies are also standard. What platforms does it support? The EDDIE Tool has been designed to be as platform-independent as possible. It is written in 100% Python and will run on all platforms that Python runs on. We think you'll agree that this version of Slackware was worth the wait. Also, this is the first release of Slackware with native support for the 64-bit x86_64 architecture! FotoTaggerMD - Add metadata to your photos

FotoTaggerMD is a metadata editor for your photos and images. With FotoTaggerMD you may simply add a title, tags and description to your photos without the need to import the photos to a complex photo managing software.

FotoTaggerMD uses IPTC metadata and displays a link to Google Maps if your photo contains EXIF GPS metadata.
FotoTaggerMD is based on the Qt Framework and the exiv2 library. The program is written in Python.

Usage

On Windows you just install the software by starting the .exe package you downloaded above. An entry in the start menu will automatically be created.

Unpack the package and change into the created directory:

$ tar xzf fototagger-0.1.1.tar.gz
$ cd fototagger-0.1.1

Then, to start the program:

$ python fototagger.py

When the main programm windows opened you may click on the "Select..." button. Browse to the folder containing your photos or images. Then "Open" that folder. Your images are loaded, this may take a while depending on the size and amount of your images.
Your images will be displayed in the left view of the main window. You may click on each image or scroll down the view to see more photos. When you click on a photo, the current (IPTC) metadata will be displayed on the right side of the main window. There you can edit the "Title", "Tags" and "Description" of the currently selected image. If your image contains (EXIF) GPS metadata, then a "Google Maps Link" will appear at the bottom of the right side of the main window. Edit the metadata in the fields on the right side and click on "Save" to save the metadata. As long as you do not click on save, no metadata will be written to the image.

A note on the metadata: the title, tags and description will be saved as IPTC metadata, as most software and online image libraries (like for example Flickr) will rely on IPTC metadata. The description field will also be written as an EXIF "UserComment", as this field is used by other kinds of software (like the Eye of GNOME on Linux).

Albus is a small Python application written for Linux using the PyGTK framework. It allows you to display album artwork on your desktop, with each album cover linked to a directory (presumably one containing media files... such as music files... such as that album's tracks... getting the idea?). From each album cover you can open the album's directory and queue or play its media files with customizable commands (depending on the player).

It was inspired by the late, great Clutter, an old Mac OS X application for the PPC architecture. I'd link you to it, but the developer's website has disappeared and the application now exists most visibly at http://osx.iusethis.com/app/clutter

Albus is not a music player -- it's meant to be used in conjunction with a music player, as a pretty-looking interface. I've used it successfully with VLC, Totem and MPD (via both Sonata MPC). Basically, any music player that lets you queue items from the command line will work. and

Actually we don't start from scratch, we use the Ubuntu operating system as a groundwork. Ubuntu is a GNU/Linux distribution whose goal is to provide an easy-to-use, up-to-date, stable and free system, also for companies. Sabily customizes Ubuntu by removing, modifying and adding software, and also customizes the graphic design to make a system adapted to Muslims.

Is there a company like Microsoft which develops Sabily?
No there isn't, just a communauty of voluntaries coming from all over the world (France, Tunisia, Egypt, Indonesia etc.). You can as well participate, as a developer, a graphic designer, a tester or if you just want to share your ideas.

What are the main features of Sabily?
The main software are: Zekr and Mus-haf Othman (Quran study tools), Minbar and Firefox-praytimes (prayer times applications), Monajat (application that popups prayers every predetermined time), Hijra (islamic calendar) and WebStrict (parental control tool). Arabic language is also well supported. And of course the graphic design is also customized (see screenshots).

What other software are included in Sabily?
OpenOffice (word processor, spreasheet, presentation), Firefox (web browser), Pidgin (instant messaging), F-spot (photos management), Gimp (image manipulation program) and other multimedia software (video/audio). If you think you have wx installed correctly then you can still use the GUI admin interface by launching the program with the "-wx" option flag. Fix Yahoo Login For Pidgin

Long way I cant connect yahoo messenger using pidgin. Many article has been read but all unsuccessfully. Finally, I found the howto from http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-to-Fix-Yahoo-problem-in-Pidgin-114754.shtml which teach step by step to make Pidgin could online again. Thanks man.

Here is the solution:

1. Download Pidgin authentication key, Right click HERE and choose the "Save Link As..." option.

2. Go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources

Enter your password if asked. Go to the second tab, "Third-Party

Software," click on the "Add" button, and paste the line below for your Ubuntu distribution, in the "APT line" field...

Modems supported by the Conexant drivers

Note: Conexant does not provide drivers for Linux, but commercial Linux drivers are available from Linuxant, a separate company. Licenses cost 19.99 US dollars. (But note that full-featured versions of the drivers are also freely available from Dell.) That comes with at least one year support and kernel-version upgrades, after which you need to purchase it again if you are running a different kernel which needs a newer version of the driver (although if you have the kernel headers installed it may be able to rebuild itself for your kernel, depending on what changes have been made in the driver - just try installing the deb and see). Without the license, the drivers are limited to a maximum speed of 14.4Kbps (this restriction does not apply to the drivers supplied by Dell). However, some Conexant modems can be run with the sl-modem-drivers (smart link) or an open source driver. Note that in general, you can buy a Lucent or Intel (smartlink, or other brand with intel chipset) modem for less than 19.99 US.

Conexant drivers provided by Dell (full-speed and free)
Dell provides drivers for the Conexant modems of their Linux-based laptops which should work with almost all Conexant HSF modems [1]. These drivers can be downloaded from the following addresses:
For Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope): Use this file. Unpack it and enter the resulting directory, do sudo make install and sudo /usr/sbin/hsfconfig

Note: The above didn't work for me when tested on listed-as-supported Conexant HDA modem.. See section below for instructions of installing updated alsa-drivers-linuxant + latest hsfmodem + Dell's free & full-speed binaries on Ubuntu/Jaunty 9.04 which works with HDA based Conexant Modems - jasmineaura 19/7/2009
For Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex): This hybrid approach has been reported to work (you can use this more recent package from Dell instead of the one mentioned in the forum post). For the lazy, just download this ready-made package; after unpacking it and entering the resulting directory, do sudo make install and sudo /usr/sbin/hsfconfig

Ubuntu / Debian Linux: Services Configuration Tool to Start / Stop System Services

Your Debian / Ubuntu Linux box security depends upon access to system services (one of many aspects). For example, you may need to provide a web server (Apache service) to serve web pages. However, if you do not need use a service, you should always turn off all unused services to avoid exploits.

Traditionally, Debian provided various tools to manage services. There are various methods for managing access to system services:
a) /etc/init.d/service
b) rcconf
c) update-rc.d etc

Under Red hat and Centos Linux you can use chkconfig command (ntsysv command) to configure Sys V style init script links. There is also service command to stop / start / restart services.

So if you are addicted to the service command under RHEL / CentOS / Mandriva Linux and have wondered what to do in Debian / Ubuntu, Linux try sysvconfig package.

sysvconfig - Services Startup Configuration Tool

Debian and Ubuntu Linux also offers service command. It can be used to execute System V style init script stored at /etc/init.d/service-name { start|stop|restart|action }. This is good if you grown up with Red hat. This tool is equivalent to update-rc.d and invoke-rc.d (rcconf and others).

sysvconfig package

First, install sysvconfig package:
$ sudo apt-get install sysvconfig

To start / restart / stop service, use the following syntax:
$ sudo service {service-name} restart <-- Restart service $ sudo service {service-name} stop <-- Stop service $ sudo service {service-name} start <-- Start service
For example to stop apache service, enter:
$ sudo service apache stop

sysvconfig command

This is a text-based application that allows you to configure which services are started at boot time for each runlevel. It is simple interface for configuring runlevels. sysvconfig is just like ntsysv under Red hat Linux. It has dialog based interactive, menus to help automate setting up Sys V style init script links:

Enable or disable services.
Edit individual links.
Restore from backup file if you make a mistake.
Menu or command line interface.
View all services, each with its status and a brief description.

To start Sys V editor, enter:
$ sudo sysvconfig &

HSFModem could not build on kernel 2.6.28-11-generic

I use kernel 2.6.28-11-generic and want to install my connexant modem driver from dell. Install is success, but when build hsfconfig there is an error like below:

Network Manager Frontend Icon Missing

I remove my existing panel and make new panel but i'm lost the icon Network Manager. So i could'nt monitor my wifi, lan, and my broadband modem. When to connect to my broadband i have to do from terminal use wvdial. I check my service and found that nm-applet (network manager applet) is running well but the icon in the taskbar is not appear. Goggling and find the same problem but still couldn't solve the problem.

Finally after making trial, i found the answer:
1. Right click at panel and "Add to panel"
2. Choose Notification Area
3. Gotcha, the icon network manager appear again

Deluge

Boot-Up Manager

Boot-Up Manager is a Perl-Gtk2 application to handle runlevels configuration of any debian derivative system. With this program the user will easily start and stop boot-up scripts, without the necessity to handle thru complex links and permissions.

Boot-Up Manager has been developed and tested on Ubuntu, but as it only relies on Perl-Gtk2 libraries, it can be run on any Debian-like system.

Installation

Debian package

BUM is currently in Debian unstable/testing and in all Ubuntu's repositories. These users can just apt-get it.

apt-get install bum

Other users of debian-derivative distro's can just download the .deb package and type, from a terminal:

sudo dpkg -i bum_2.1.8-1_all.deb

Your Boot-Up Manager is placed into System->Administration menu.

Tarball

Unpack your tarball and build the program:

tar -xvzf bum-2.2.0.tar.gz

cd bum-2.2.0

./configure --prefix=/usr

make

make install

Last command must be run with root privileges. Please read the INSTALL file, for configuration options.

If while logging in it shows error like "Invalid Username or Incorrect Password", and you are sure you entered them correctly, then it is the problem with special characters in your password. Change the password and you are good to go...

Also, use the Protocol "YMSG-15 / Messenger 8" as the older Protocols are being turned off...

Resapplet is a simple utility that sits in the system notification area nd allows switching the resolution and refresh rate.

It uses the randr extensions to switch the resolution on-the-fly and user esolution preferences to save the resolution.

It works in both GNOME and KDE, because it uses the system notification area.

To install:

#apt-get install resapplet

After install, the new icon will then appear besides NetworkMonitor in the notification area.

In order to start automatically, add in the System -> Preferences -> Sessions

Share Internet Connection On VirtualBox

The following will explain howto sharing internet connection on virtualbox which ubuntu act as host and windows xp as guest.

Note: Type all the following commands in a root terminal, DO NOT use sudo.

1. Start by configuring the network card that interfaces to the other computers on you network:

# ifconfig ethX ip

where ethX is the network card and ip is your desired server ip address (Usually 192.168.0.1 is used)

2. Then configure the NAT as follows:

# iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ethX -j MASQUERADE

where ethX is the network card that the Internet is coming from

# echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

3. Install dnsmasq and ipmasq using apt-get:

# apt-get install dnsmasq ipmasq

4. Restart dnsmasq:

# /etc/init.d/dnsmasq restart

5. Reconfigure ipmasq to start after networking has been started:

# dpkg-reconfigure ipmasq

6. Repeat steps 1 and 2.

7. Add the line "net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1" to /etc/sysctl.conf

# gedit /etc/sysctl.conf

8. Reboot. (Optional)

Speed Up Internet in Ubuntu

Most of the slow internet connection caused by ipv6 environment. ipv6 slows down the ipv4 environment if the router out the door does not understand ipv6 and for most people ipv6 is not needed.Try this tricks :

Open Terminal, and type :

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/aliases

at the line, alias net-pf-10 ipv6, you can 'comment' (#) or just add off at the end of the line as shown below..

Reboot & see the difference..

TimeVault

TimeVault is a simple front-end for making snapshots of a set of directories. Snapshots are a copy of a directory structure or file at a certain point in time. Restore functionality is integrated into Nautilus - previous versions of a file or directory that has a snapshot can be accessed by examining the properties and selecting the 'Previous Versions' tab.

Snapshots are protected from accidental deletion or modification since they are read-only by default. The super-user can delete intermediate snapshots to save space, but files and directories that existed before or after the deletion will still be accessible.

A snapshot is a copy of a directory at a certain point in time. Snapshots don't use space for the files that haven't changed but instead simply add a link to the same data on disk. When a file (link) is deleted, the link count for the data on disk is decremented. When it reaches 0 the data is marked free in the allocation table and new data can then be written to those blocks. As most allocations of data have only 1 file that links to them data is usually freed when its file is deleted.

Only files are hard-linked this way. In most filesystems directory hardlinks are disallowed because they can cause endless recursion. Apple specifically modified their system by adding mandatory recursion detection to prevent infinite loops, ostensibly purely for their backup software.

Introduction to Tar

The Tar program provides the ability to create tar archives, as well as various other kinds of manipulation. For example, you can use Tar on previously created archives to extract files, to store additional files, or to update or list files which were already stored.

Initially, tar archives were used to store files conveniently on magnetic tape. The name "Tar" comes from this use; it stands for tape archiver. Despite the utility's name, Tar can direct its output to available devices, files, or other programs (using pipes), it can even access remote devices or files (as archives).

rsync is an open source utility that provides fast incremental file transfer. rsync is freely available under the GNU General Public License and is currently being maintained by Wayne Davison.

rdiff-backup

rdiff-backup backs up one directory to another, possibly over a network. The target directory ends up a copy of the source directory, but extra reverse diffs are stored in a special subdirectory of that target directory, so you can still recover files lost some time ago. The idea is to combine the best features of a mirror and an incremental backup. rdiff-backup also preserves subdirectories, hard links, dev files, permissions, uid/gid ownership, modification times, extended attributes, acls, and resource forks. Also, rdiff-backup can operate in a bandwidth efficient manner over a pipe, like rsync. Thus you can use rdiff-backup and ssh to securely back a hard drive up to a remote location, and only the differences will be transmitted. Finally, rdiff-backup is easy to use and settings have sensical defaults.
