gKamus

Imagination

Imagination is a lightweight and simple DVD slide show maker written in C language and built with the GTK+2 toolkit. I noticed a lack on the Linux platform of a user-friendly DVD slide show maker, so I started developing Imagination. True, there are some other GUIs which do the job, but they usually require a lot of dependencies to be installed first. Imagination has been designed from the ground up to be fast, light and easy-to-use. It requires the ffmpeg encoder ONLY to produce the movie file - to be burned to DVD then with another application. Yes you don't need any other third-party software, I like the KISS principle :)

Imagination at present features 26 transitions effects developed as plugins loaded at startup. Exporting of the slideshow as FLV format too is supported. No sound and Ken Burns effects yet but they are planned in future releases (sound may add another dependence...)

And, if you need help in using Linguist, just write me.

Acknowledgements

Wally has been deeply inspired by John's Background Switcher, a great software, well designed and much more capable than Wally. Infact, it's still running on one of my PCs :)

Anyway, I decided to write Wally for two reasons:

· JBS is based on .NET, a framework that is not installed on every PC, cause of its "heaviness" and system resources' usage.
· And, mainly, it cannot run on platforms like Linux / MacOSX.

So, I'd like to thank John Conners, for giving me the opportunity to re-use its idea in order to fulfill the universe of wallpaper changers not covered by JBS :)

First of all, I'd like to thank Tanya, my wife, for all her support before, during Wally's development and after :)

I'd also like to thank:

· Francesco De Marchi, Sylvain Gueniot, Oliver Schwabedissen and Ferhat Dogru for bugs reporting and time spent in testing.
· Leandro Palagiano, for Ubuntu .deb packages creation.
· Photobucket staff, for support and promoting.

Make Firefox Java Plugin Work

I try to download from kissyoutoube.com and the java applet didn't running yet. However, I was frustrated to discover that the Firefox browser didn't display the websites containing java applets with the default settings, even if you have the updated JRE installed. After a few searches and referring half a dozen websites, I found out that Firefox was using Java Iced Tea (OpenJDK) to render applets. This seemed like the primary source of the problem.

You can check the java version installed on your system as below:

java -version

And then, I install sun-java6-jre from Synaptic Packet Manager.

Finally, you need to create a soft link for the java plugin in the firefox plugin directory as shown below

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.10/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/firefox-3.0.8/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so

Now, since, you might have more than one java packages installed on your system, you will have to suggest Ubuntu to use the newly downloaded java 6 as shown below

sudo update-alternatives --config java

And, Voila! It's done. This will, hopefully, get your firefox browser to recognize and display java applets correctly.

watsup

Monitor system resources and the processes using those resources.

  • Overhead is low, supporting a sample interval down to 0.1 seconds

Ubuntu Studio 8.10 released

Get Ubuntu Studio 8.10 final now.

Sorry about no real time kernel by default this time. A ".1" release will be done soon with it. Thanks for the support!

Slackware 12.2 is released!

Yes folks, 'tis the season to announce a new release of Slackware. With a shiny new kernel, many package updates, and the newly added ability to install from a Samba share, we bring to you the latest in the stable Slackware 12.x series. Slackware 12.2 ships with the 2.6.27.7 Linux kernel, the Xorg 1.4.2 X server (with many driver, library, and application updates), Xfce 4.4.3, KDE 3.5.10, simplified wired and wireless networking with wicd in /extra, package upgrade management with slackpkg moved into the main tree, support for non-usb-storage digital cameras through libgphoto2, pm-utils (tools to support suspend and hibernate through HAL), and much, much more. This release brings the system up-to-date without compromising stability or compatibility with the 12.x series.

More details may be found in the official announcement.

If you like Slackware, please consider supporting the project by picking up a copy of Slackware 12.2 from the Slackware Store. The discs are off to replication now and pre-orders are being accepted for the official 6 CD or 1 DVD set. Also by popular demand, we now have black T-shirts with the original Slackware logo for sale. Check 'em out!

Thanks are due to the Slackware crew, the developers of slackbuilds.org, the fine folks on linuxquestions.org, IRC, and everyone else who pitched in to help make this another great Slackware release. We couldn't have done it without your help.

As always -- have fun!

Pat and the Slackware crew
