Greenstone

Greenstone is a suite of software for building and distributing digital library collections. It provides a new way of organizing information and publishing it on the Internet or on CD-ROM. Greenstone is produced by the New Zealand Digital Library Project at the University of Waikato, and developed and distributed in cooperation with UNESCO and the Human Info NGO. It is open-source, multilingual software, issued under the terms of the GNU General Public License. Read the Greenstone Factsheet for more information.

The aim of the Greenstone software is to empower users, particularly in universities, libraries, and other public service institutions, to build their own digital libraries. Digital libraries are radically reforming how information is disseminated and acquired in UNESCO's partner communities and institutions in the fields of education, science and culture around the world, and particularly in developing countries. We hope that this software will encourage the effective deployment of digital libraries to share information and place it in the public domain. Further information can be found in the book How to build a digital library, authored by two of the group's members.

LiVES

What is LiVES ?

LiVES began in 2002 as the Linux Video Editing System. Since it now runs on more operating systems: LiVES is a Video Editing System. It is designed to be simple to use, yet powerful. It is small in size, yet it has many advanced features.

LiVES is a Free, Open Source video editor *and* a VJ tool.

LiVES mixes realtime video performance and non-linear editing in one professional quality application. It will let you start editing and making video right away, without having to worry about formats, frame sizes, or framerates. It is a very flexible tool which is used by both professional VJ's and video editors - mix and switch clips from the keyboard, use dozens of realtime effects, trim and edit your clips in the clip editor, and bring them together using the multitrack timeline. You can even record your performance in real time, and then edit it further or render it straight away.

For the more technically minded, the application is frame and sample accurate, and it can be controlled remotely or scripted for use as a video server. And it supports all of the latest free standards.

LiVES is good enough to be used as a VJ tool for professional performances, and as a video editor is capable of creating dazzling clips in a huge variety of formats. For a full list of the features of LiVES, look at the features page.

Check out some of the other pages here for screenshots, demo videos, add-ons, and of course, you can download and use it for free !

TuxMathScrabble

TuxMathScrabble 0.6.2 May 19, 2009

What's New?
As of version 0.6.0 the Wx toolkit is merely an option, and it is off by default. If you think you have wx installed correctly then you can still use the GUI admin interface by launching the program with the "-wx" option flag. Wx is being rendered to optional status for the other Asymptopia Software products: TuxWordSmith and Multiplication Station.

May 6, 2009:

TuxMathScrabble is a math version of the classic word game "Scrabble" (Trademark of Hasbro,Inc) which challenges kids to construct compound equations and to consider multiple abstract possibilities. There are four skill levels for practice, from basic addition with small numbers, through multiplication and division with larger numbers. The game can be played by 0, 1 or 2 human players. Player submissions are made by dragging tiles to the gameboard and pressing the "okay" button when ready to be validated. Invalid submissions are thrown-back to the user's tray. Several new features have recently been added, such as the ability to shuffle player tiles in-place, the programatic creation of tiles on-the-fly (as opposed to using images), configurable tile transparency, the ability to use a background image, and the option of configuring the "None" character for either/both players. (Lin/Win/Mac)

Did you know? With TuxWordSmith you get English Scrabble, French Scrabble, German Scrabble, Italian Scrabble, Greek Scrabble, Latin Scrabble, Dutch Scrabble, Swahili Scrabble, Spanish Scrabble, Russian Scrabble, Ukranian Scrabble, Swedish Scrabble, Icelandic Scrabble, Norwegian Scrabble, Finnish Scrabble, Brazillian-Portuguese Scrabble, Arabic Scrabble, Hindi Scrabble, Turkish Scrabble, Czech Scrabble, Kurdish Scrabble, Hungarian Scrabble and more, all in one application!

Dialup Modem Howto Conexant

Modems supported by the Conexant drivers

Note: Conexant does not provide drivers for Linux, but commercial Linux drivers are available from Linuxant, a separate company. Licenses cost 19.99 US dollars. (But note that full-featured versions of the drivers are also freely available from Dell.) That comes with at least one year support and kernel-version upgrades, after which you need to purchase it again if you are running a different kernel which needs a newer version of the driver (although if you have the kernel headers installed it may be able to rebuild itself for your kernel, depending on what changes have been made in the driver - just try installing the deb and see). Without the license, the drivers are limited to a maximum speed of 14.4Kbps (this restriction does not apply to the drivers supplied by Dell). However, some Conexant modems can be run with the sl-modem-drivers (smart link) or an open source driver. Note that in general, you can buy a Lucent or Intel (smartlink, or other brand with intel chipset) modem for less than 19.99 US.

Conexant drivers provided by Dell (full-speed and free)
Dell provides drivers for the Conexant modems of their Linux-based laptops which should work with almost all Conexant HSF modems [1]. These drivers can be downloaded from the following addresses:
For Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope): Use this file. Unpack it and enter the resulting directory, do sudo make install and sudo /usr/sbin/hsfconfig

Note: The above didn't work for me when tested on listed-as-supported Conexant HDA modem.. See section below for instructions of installing updated alsa-drivers-linuxant + latest hsfmodem + Dell's free & full-speed binaries on Ubuntu/Jaunty 9.04 which works with HDA based Conexant Modems - jasmineaura 19/7/2009
For Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex): This hybrid approach has been reported to work (you can use this more recent package from Dell instead of the one mentioned in the forum post). For the lazy, just download this ready-made package; after unpacking it and entering the resulting directory, do sudo make install and sudo /usr/sbin/hsfconfig

For Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron): http://linux.dell.com/files/ubuntu/hardy/modem-drivers/hsf/.
For Ubuntu 7.10 (Gusty Gibbon): http://linux.dell.com/files/ubuntu/gutsy/modem-drivers/hsf/.
Download the .deb file there, double click it and it will be installed automatically.
Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty) users can use this link to install their Conexant HSF driver.
